Money: Corus Steel – 19th Feb 10

Steel making has been part of the fabric of Teesside in the north east for 135 years. That lineage won’t end today but a sizeable part of it will die when the mothballing of the TCP plant in Redcar kicks in and the redundancy notices start to be sent to 1,600 people in the area. It’s an old cliche that when you get two economists in a room, you will always get at least three opinions being argued. Well 60 of the world’s more respected economists have actually agreed on something: that withdrawing the economic stimulus too early would damage Britain’s recovery in the long term. Finally, the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust has sold its £1.9 million stake in the UK-listed mining company Vedanta. The trust says it’s done this because it has serious concerns about Vedanta’s approach to human rights and the environment, particularly in the Indian state of Orissa.
